Overview

The Saint Louis Science Center is one of the only free nonprofit science museums in the country, and serves more than one million people each year, making it one of the largest science centers in the U.S. and abroad. The science Center was looking for a new brochure design to showcase their amenities and attractions in a visually pleasing way.

The goal of this particular project was to design a new and fresh looking brochure that showed the numerous attractions of the science center.

Background

The Saint Louis Science Center’s campus features more than 700 interactive experiences in ten galleries, as well as an indoor-outdoor GROW agricultural pavilion and gallery, the famous McDonnell Planetarium, and a four-story OMNIMAX® Theater.

Understanding the Process

The Saint Louis Science Center had a very established brand. This brand was created with  the primary thought of user friendly experience as the over all goal. consumers.

I conducted research of the existing brand along with the designs that were in place to pin point challenges in the pre-existing brochure.

My research encompassed:
  • Understanding the user goals and needs
  • Uncovering challenges with the existing brochure
  • Matching the pre-existing brand and improving the visual hierarchy of the brochure in more aesthetically pleasing way.

Results and Takeaways

Since the new design  of the Saint Louis Science Center.  I have received a lot of positive feedback from multiple users about the unique layout of the information, in addition to the correlation of the overall design to the pre-existing brand.

Some key takeaways from this project are:

  • Create a strategic plan to launch a design that would remain true to the brand, but still user friendly. This helps alleviate confusion throughout and makes the over all look of the design more clean and consistent.
  • User testing doesn’t end after development. Design is a constant iteration of improving the experience for the end user. Always find ways to collect and listen to your user’s and client’s feedback.
