Ethan Endurance Challenge

Overview

The mission of the Ethan Foundation is to raise awareness and promote proactive, healthy lifestyle for our youth. The Ethan Foundation wanted to come up with a new fundraiser to raise money, awareness, and inspire both parents and children to lead healthy lives.

The goal of this particular project was to establish a design concept for the  new fundraiser event (Ethan Endurance Challenge). The clients wanted a application that would compliment the event and allow participants to register. This was a methodical process with numerous parts and pieces. A large portion of this project was to design the application and establish usability issues while maintaining a visually appealing look with the existing brand.

Background

Founded in 2012, The Ethan Foundation is the passion project of Erin Richter. Richter, owner of and Level 3 Trainer at CrossFit Old School, saw the need for proper education surrounding leading a healthy lifestyle — from childhood to adulthood — within the community of Bowling Green, Ky.

Named for Richter’s recently born nephew, The Ethan Foundation promotes maintaining a healthy lifestyle from infancy. The foundation believes that a healthy lifestyle is not something only adults should be concerned with. It’s a choice that requires patience, dedication and a willingness to learn. It is our wish to inspire both parents and children to lead healthy lives.

The Ethan Foundation will play a role in helping everyone understand that better food choices, along with exercise, is a proactive undertaking.

The Process

The process for this project was very collaborative and methodical. I started by researching the Ethan Foundation and gathered their main objective. After a further collaborative assessment, I proceeded to mock-up some ideas on paper. After brainstorming ideas, I presented the paper copies to the clients to gather further feedback.

Paper drafts shown below.

Brand Board

After working through some details on paper, II proceeded to make a mood board. A mood board allowed me to showcase the overall look I was going for. This part of the project was beneficial in terms of piecing together key components such as color scheme, logo, and typography choices.

Landing Page

For the landing page, I wanted to stick as close to the original aesthetic of the Ethan Foundation with some slight variations. I kept the same color scheme and added the orange to give some dynamic to the design. I also created a new logo to  establish the event as an added entity to the foundation as a whole.

App Screens

The main priority of the app is allowing individuals and teams to register for the event. After further collaborating with the Ethan foundation, they also wanted the app to incorporate some basic information about the organization in terms of what they’re about. While designing the app, I stuck closely to the design of the Web landing page to decrease confusion.

Function

One of the primary goals was creating a functional application that mixed cohesively with the brand. After collaborating with the clients on the app screen designs, I wanted to show how the app would function for users. I designed a prototype in Adobe XD to allow the clients to see how their app would function. Below is the video that walks through the app step by step for each screen.

Results and Takeaways

Since the implementation of the new design of the application, The Ethan Foundation has experienced a significant amount of positive feedback from participants. Additionally, I have received positive feedback from multiple users about the simplified configuration  and layout of the registration process. Overall the Ethan Foundation was very pleased with the application.

Some key takeaways from this project are:

  • Create a strategic plan to launch a new design. This helps deal with out-of-scope requests that could potentially derail the project and helps deliver a quality product in time.
  • User testing doesn’t end after development. Design is a constant iteration of improving the experience for the end user. Always find ways to collect and listen to your user’s and client’s feedback.
