Overview

Eckerd is a liberal arts college in St. Petersburg, Florida, and is one of 40 schools featured in Colleges That Change Lives. Eckerd is a NCAA Division II school that is apart of the Sunshine State Conference and is home of the Women’s basketball conference champions.

I had the opportunity to help improve the marketing for Eckerd’s women’s basketball program. The primary goal was to create aesthetically pleasing designs that would help increase their marketing for the program.

Background

Eckerd College is located on 188 acres of waterfront property in St. Petersburg, Florida. A private, coeducational, liberal arts college, Eckerd offers students with every background, belief and personality. Eckerd’s 1,970 students from 47 states and territories and 40 countries choose among 41 majors leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Science degree.

Understanding the Problem

Eckerd Women’s basketball did not have a lot of consistency throughout it’s social media or marketing strategies. Eckerd already has an implemented design based on the design aspects throughout the college, but there wasn’t a lot of consistency in how they were applying that.

There was a lot of communication and interviews that were conducted with the primary users (Eckerd Coaching Staff and players) to uncover any inconsistencies that they were experiencing with their current designs.

My research encompassed:
  • Understanding the user goals and establishing an overall their overall objective.
  • Uncovering inconsistencies with their existing marketing strategies and layouts.
  • Determining the success of the tasks measured.

Results and Takeaways

Since the production of these new designs for the women’s basketball program, there has been a lot of positive feedback and a increase in their social media following. Additionally, I have received positive feedback from the Eckerd coaching staff about the consistency of the designs.

Some key takeaways from this project are:

  • Create a strategic plan to launch a new design. This helps create a consistency throughout their marketing and social media platforms.
  • Communication. Design is a constant iteration of improving the experience for the end users and client. Always find ways to collect and listen to constructive feedback in order to continue improving.
